A scribe may work under a provider’s login credentials. However, there must be some defined rules and guidelines for the scribe’s activity due to the scribe has the same access as the provider. We suggest reviewing the following information to assist in developing scribe guidelines.
- Create a separate login for Admin access.
- Limit access for the provider’s login.
- All authorizations should come from the provider and not from the scribe, (e.g. medications, eyeglass and contact lens Rx, coding, and encounter signature).
- Your signature signifies you have reviewed the information and believe it to be accurate. The scribe should not sign on your behalf.
The Ancillary Participants feature is a great way to have the scribe “sign” the encounter in addition to the provider. Ancillary Participants is a setting that needs to be enabled in Admin.
We recommend you reference your local and state requirements for the use of scribes and best practices for documentation before implementing a process for your practice.
