Important: Surcharging is a RevPay exclusive feature and is only available for practices using RevPay
Will patients see the surcharge before paying?
Yes. For in‑office payments taken on a terminal, the surcharge amount is clearly shown before the payment is completed, and the patient must accept before the card is charged.
For online payments, patients see disclaimer text, and once they enter a credit card number, the surcharge rate and dollar amount are displayed before they submit the payment.
Does surcharging apply to copays or patient balances?
Surcharging applies to eligible credit card transactions processed through RevPay, regardless of whether the payment is for a copay, a visit charge, or a patient balance. When a patient pays with a card, RevPay evaluates the payment method and applies surcharging automatically when the transaction is eligible.
RevPay does not determine whether surcharging is permitted for a specific type of charge or scenario; each practice is responsible for deciding how surcharging should be used within its own billing policies.
Will patients be notified before a stored card with a surcharge is charged?
Yes. When a payment is eligible for surcharging, RevPay displays a clear breakdown before the payment is processed, including:
- The base payment amount
- The surcharge amount
- The total amount to be charged
This information appears during the payment flow so staff can review the total with the patient before completing the transaction.
How does the surcharge appear after payment?
After the payment is completed:
- The confirmation screen shows the payment amount, surcharge, and total collected.
- The receipt displays the surcharge as a separate line item, alongside the base payment and total.
Is the experience the same across payment methods?
Yes, the surcharge is displayed consistently across supported RevPay payment workflows. If the payment method is not eligible for surcharging, no surcharge is calculated, shown, or applied.
Are staff required to manually calculate or explain the surcharge amount to patients?
No. RevPay automatically calculates and applies the surcharge on eligible transactions and displays the amounts clearly in the workflow and on the receipt. Staff do not need to perform any manual math, and can rely on the on‑screen breakdown when explaining the charge to patients.
